Meander through the Anderson Valley to Mendocino

Before heading west, make a stop at Pennyroyal Farm. Recognized for their sheep and goat milk cheeses (try the Boont Corners Tomme), the farm is less well known for their locally-sourced wines – the rose of pinot noir is a favorite. If you plan ahead, you can take a farm tour (at 10:30am only), sit on the patio for a guided wine and cheese tasting, or pick up a picnic lunch to enjoy later at Hendy Woods, a glorious old growth coastal redwood forest near Philo.

Make sure to pause for a moment or two at Hendy Woods for a chance to walk amongst old-growth coastal redwoods. You might be the only ones on the trail if you go off-season (November - March). If you have a few hours, try Big Hendy’s 1.6-mile Upper Loop Trail to see the splendid old-growth trees that lie just beyond the Discovery Trail.

I always recommend pulling over at farm stands, random little shops, and anything that screams "local." Since the hours of many restaurants and shops in Anderson Valley are quite limited (many are weekends only or Thursday to Monday only, for example), check out the ones you can. They've built a name for themselves on their deviled eggs alone, and they are show-stoppers. Topped with fermented chile and wasabi roe (spicy!), the presentation is stunning, like a forest in miniature. Dishes may include celery route and almond veloute or pork belly with pean tendrils and braised butter beans or a "faux gras" of king trumpet mushrooms. Whatever you have, it is a gourmand's delight and not to be missed.
Not in the mood to sit down and eat? The onsite Market has a sweet selection of gourmet foods, wine and other yumminess that you can grab and go. The Market is open "most Fridays and Saturdays" from 12 noon to 5 pm. This is Mendo – just roll with it.

If you can stay in the town of Mendocino, you can easily walk to the town's cafes and shops and this B&B is perfectly situated for that. Yes, it is charming, and the hearty breakfasts can be enjoyed in the lovely garden on days when the weather is so inclined.

A focus on international flavors means Vietnamese salad is served in traditional style with a pile of fragrant herbs on top and sauce on the side. Burritos (choice of Soyrizo or bacon) and other Cal-Mex standards are here, too but with a touch of refinement in the platings. It's a great spot to relax at the end of a relaxing day.

After the day's eating, another walk may be just what the doctor ordered. Stroll around the town of Mendocino or head just south of town for a walk that skirts the cliff's edge.
