Drive to the Historic City of Savannah

Take a break in the city of Macon, the halfway point on your road trip today. Tubman Museum is the largest museum dedicated to African American history, art, and culture in the southeast, and an important icon in Macon. The 49,000-square-foot museum features a magnificent 63-foot-long mural titled “From Africa to America,” presenting a visual history of Black people from early days in Africa to current leaders and heroes, including Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., Otis Redding, Ellen Craft, Minnie Smith, and many more. The museum is open Tuesday – Saturday from 9am to 5pm.
After your visit, you can stroll down Cherry Street, admiring the Japanese cherry blossom trees if they are in bloom. Get a cup of coffee at the neighborhood cafe Z Beans, or explore the birthplace of Southern rock at Mercer Music at Capricorn Museum.

If you need to stretch your legs, take a meditative walk at the Guido Gardens, located close to the Metter Welcome Center. This tranquil and meditative garden has sparkling waterfalls, babbling brooks, and a peaceful Chapel.
The garden is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

To learn about Savannah’s rich history centered around free and enslaved people who once lived here, visit the historic home from 1820. The house is one of the best examples of the historic preservation movement in Savannah that has saved and restored several properties.
Davenport House Museum is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10am-4pm and on Sunday from 1pm-4pm. Purchase tickets at their website.
After visiting the museum, continue to explore historic downtown Savannah by walking around its 22 Spanish style squares surrounded by restored homes constructed in Georgian, Greek Revival, Gothic, Art Deco, and Italianate styles.

Make sure to check out this quirky (and perhaps the only one of its kind) museum dedicated to the history of Prohibition. Going through several rooms of exhibits, posters, and videos, you'll learn about the true story of America’s struggle with liquor in the early 1900s. At the end of your visit, grab a drink at the speakeasy bar inside.

Once you arrive in Savannah, take a stroll to Boroughton Street, the area known for shopping, cafes and restaurants. Tonight, enjoy dinner at one of the most acclaimed restaurants in the country, housed in what was a segregated Greyhound bus terminal. Savannah-born co-owner/chef Mashama Bailey appeared on Netflix’s Chef series and co-authored the book Black, White and the Grey, which talks about race and the South, among other things.

After dinner, walk to this 100-plus-year-old, old-school ice cream parlor serving soda fountain and classic flavors, such as Tutti Frutti and butter pecan. The interior is decorated with movie posters and Hollywood memorabilia (a descendent of the owner is a movie producer as well). Leopold has been named one of the best ice cream parlors in the world by several publications.
