Visit the John Brown Farm State Historic Site which includes the home and final resting place of famous abolitionist John Brown. The simple farm is located on John Brown Road in the town of North Elba, three miles southeast of Lake Placid, where John Brown moved in 1849 to teach farming to African Americans. After touring the small home, take a brisk hike along the Potato Field and Maple Grove Trail Loop on the property. It's two and a half miles with excellent birding and some lovely views of the area. It's an easy route and should take about 45 minutes to complete.

Stop in the beautiful town of Lake George, whose lake by the same name dominates the town. On the southern shore of Lake George, visit the Fort William Henry Museum. The main attraction here is a restored British fort from the French and Indian War, built in 1755.

Make your way south back toward New York and stop in Woodstock, an artsy community deemed by most as the inspiration for the famous Woodstock Music Festival that took place in nearby Bethel in 1969. Dine at the vegan Garden Cafe Woodstock then wander the cozy downtown area for an hour or two before hopping back in the car home.

Pop into this organic bakery for a loaf of yummy bread to bring home with you.
